All around us as we walk they are springing up from the winter undergrowth and gladdening the heart, and soon during spring and early summer the island will become a golden carpet! This is the Haxixa Ingliza-(Cape Sorrel) a flower not really indigenous to Malta, but so much a feature of the spring scene.Apparently it was introduced into a botanical garden here in 1811 from South Africa, it somehow escaped and spread throughout the country and indeed the Mediterranean. It's hard to imagine the next months without them, everywhere you go, as soon as there is a glimpse of sunshine they burst out into a bright beautiful mass ofyellow,- a reflection of the sun itself.
How they cheer me!
Earth laughs in flowers.
Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Sweet flowers- their golden glow
floods my heart with sunlight
in a moment of joy.
